Review:
Not a great movie. It could be a great movie, but is let down by two main ways. First off, two of the three lead characters are interesting. Blake Lively makes for great eye candy, but she just was not a good actor. Shes not bad at helping small role (as his part in Town), but he just could not bring lead. Unfortunately the whole movie basically revolves around her (and she told), so its omission is brought front and center. Every time his voice-over comes on, I cringed. It's really not a good choice. Taylor Kitsch was not good. Again ... nice eye candy, poor acting. Hardly acting. He just does not have a soul, and brings his character really do not know what else. He should be in stores cynical and angry Vin Diesel movie play honest, not Oliver Stone drama. The second major failure of this film is the worst, and that is the structure of the story. We never really given the opportunity to understand why the three lead characters (Chon, Ben and Ophelia) has strong feelings for one another. He said that they do, but not given any real reason to believe. It's very important, because the actual entire premise of the film lies in their relationship. If you are going to build the world's biggest stories unorthodox three-way interaction, the better you explain more rapid convergence in relation to exactly how it happened, otherwise viewers wont know why they should care about the characters. Especially when the actor to show the characters are not very good to begin with. I know that I could ask why these two guys share girl, like really jealous zero, why they never once thought of double-crossing each other, and why either they are very important in detail for it - to the point to be willing to risk their lives and focus on amazing evil to save his life. Where did all the love and trust come from? It has never been explained adequately, and the whole movie suffers greatly for it.On slightly more positive note, the veteran actor did a good job. Benicio Del Toro is fantastic as cartel psychotic Underboss, John Travolta chewed scenery pieces, and Salma Hayek is quite likely in his role as well. Unfortunately, their potential only served to emphasize the inability of the leading younger. He said that the best location in the entire film is between Del Toro and Travolta, none of the three lead actors to be found anywhere, and hinted at the promise of this film squandered. A lot of reviews took issue with the violence portrayed in the film, but I have no problem with that. You can not lose really make a film about Mexican drug cartels without violence, so I do not feel it is based. Unfortunately, however, also does not make the movie any more from perspective.Overall plot, I just do not think it is a very good movie. I do not think that Stone felt quite comfortable with what he was doing here, trying to be Tarantino frequently but fail miserably. And even so, I think that this film would be in the hands of Tarantino or Robert Rodriguez, probably would have come out better, maybe even better.
